Etymology and Cultural Appropriation

Etymology is the study of the history of words. We should all take the time to make ourselves familiar with this branch of knowledge.

I believe that we should be more aware of the words we use. We should be mindful of our word usage due to the fact that it is contingent, to a certain extent, on the culture.

For example: I wouldn’t use the “N-Word” because it’s the word choice of many African Americans.

Awareness is key. To assure one is not committing appropriation, refer to the dictionary.

The origin of the word yogurt derives from the Turkish language. Therefore, it would be disingenuous to use this word if one is not a native Turkish speaker.

Cultural appropriation is a one of the greatest issues of our time. Let’s not commit this racist act anymore. Be aware of your word choices!
